The Jan. 17, 1961 execution of Patrice Lumumba, Congo's first post-colonial prime minister --with the involvement of the U.S., Belgium and Britain-- had a profound negative impact on all of Africa, paving the way for other Western interventions against nationalist presidents in Africa--including the U.S. backed coup against Kwame Nkrumah.

Join me Tuesday Jan. 21 as I look back, with Congolese art educator and documentary filmmaker Lubangi Muniania, at the 59th anniversary of the catastrophic assassination of Lumumba and it's aftermath and lingering impact on Congo,  the region, and Africa.

Muniania is an Art Educator, specialized in the visual and performing arts of Africa. He has worked as an exhibition consultant for Georgia Tech University's Robert C. Williams Paper Museum, a former Director of Education at the Museum for African Art in New York, African Art Education consultant for the Art Institute of Chicago, Saint Louis Museum of Arts, festivals and several cultural centers. 

He has written curriculum materials, articles for newspapers, essays for museum publications and universities. 

Muniania is currently the president of Tabilulu Productions. He has participated and produced documentaries such as Memories of Lumumba for the Museum for African Art, African Portrait for NBC, a documentary on the Democratic Republic of Congo for Bill Moyers Journal at PBS and These Girls are Missing for Guinea-Conakry.
