Pompeo rips group of Democrats for meeting with Iranian foreign minister

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo ripped a group of democrats Tuesday for privately meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif during a weekend conference in Germany.

Pompeo told reporters during a tour of Africa that he worried the meeting could undermine foreign strategy with Iran and Zarif, who has been designated for sanctions by the Treasury Department for sponsoring global terrorism.

“This is the foreign minister of a country that killed an American on December 27. And it’s the foreign minister of a country who is the largest world sponsor of terror and the world’s largest sponsor of anti-Semitism,” Pompeo said, according to Townhall. “If they met, I don’t know what they said. I hope they were reinforcing America’s foreign policy and not their own.”

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) led the meeting Saturday night during a foreign policy conference for world leaders held over the weekend in Germany. He offered his version of events in a Medium post Tuesday in which he criticized President Trump for not creating a diplomatic channel for negotiations between the US and Iran.

“I have no delusions about Iran — they are our adversary, responsible for the killing of thousands of Americans and unacceptable levels of support for terrorist organizations throughout the Middle East,” Murphy wrote. “But I think it’s dangerous to not talk to your enemies.”

The meeting was first reported by The Federalist.

Murphy followed his post up on Twitter, adding members of Congress have a responsibility to meet with foreign ministers. He wrote that he pressed Zarif to control Iranian proxies in Iraq; release American citizens being unlawfully detained and to step in to address Houthi rebels’ blocking of humanitarian relief in Yemen.

“Congress is a co-equal branch to the executive,” he said. “We set foreign policy too. Many of us have met w Zarif over the years, under Obama and Trump.”
