Trump suspends travel from Europe over coronavirus fears

President Donald Trump says he will suspend all travel from Europe except the United Kingdom in a desperate effort to halt the coronavirus.

“We are responding with great speed and professionalism,” Trump said in his second Oval Office address.

Trump spoke after US cases of COVID-19 topped 1,200 and deaths hit 38. The Dow plunged another 1,400 points Wednesday — down 20 percent after a record high just one month ago.

“We will be suspending all travel from Europe to the United States for the next 30 days. The new rules will go into effect Friday at midnight,” Trump said, reading from a script.

The outbreak threatens Trump’s legacy and reelection outlook as he’s struggled to stop spread of the virus and its economic impact.

Trump said there would be limited exceptions to the unprecedented and open-ended travel restriction.

“There will be exemptions for Americans who have undergone appropriate screenings,” Trump said. “And these prohibitions will not only apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo. But various other things as we get approval, anything coming from Europe to the United States.”

He added: “these restrictions will also not apply to the United Kingdom.”

The World Health Organization recognized the outbreak as a pandemic Wednesday. After emerging in China in late December, the virus has infected more than 115,000 people in 114 countries, killing more than 4,200.

There are significant clusters of infection in California, Florida, New York and Washington state. Trump said the clusters were “seeded” by travel from Europe, where there are large outbreaks in Italy, France, Germany and Spain.
