Kim Jong Un appears in public for first time in weeks: report

Kim Jong Un, rumored for weeks to be deathly ill or even dead, has made his first public appearance in 20 days, according to reports from North and South Korea.

North Korea’s KCNA news agency reported that Kim cut the ribbon at the opening of a fertilizer factory, the BBC reported Friday evening.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported is also reporting a public appearance by the dictator.

Few details were immediately available; the KCNA report did not provide photos of the appearance, saying only that Kim was accompanied by several senior officials, including his sister Kim Yo Jung, and that a cheer went up when the ribbon was cut.

But if true, the appearance would belie rumors of Kim’s death following surgery.

The report said he attended a Saturday morning (local time) ceremony for the completion of a fertilizer plant in Sunchon, South Phyongan Province.

It is his first reported public sighting since he was last seen on April 11, presiding over a political bureau meeting of the ruling Workers Party.

Since then, he missed events commemorating the 108th birthday of his grandfather Kim Il-sung, on April 15, sparking the speculation about his well being.

Other reports said he was in Wonsan, staying away from Pyongyang over fears of contracting coronavirus.
