{UAH} Improving girls’ menstrual hygiene
Improving girls' menstrual hygiene
According to World Health Organization, menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is about access to menstrual hygiene products to absorb or collect menstrual blood, privacy to change the materials, and access to facilities to dispose of used menstrual management materials.
Unfortunately, menstrual hygiene management can be particularly challenging for girls and women in developing countries, where clean water and toilet facilities are often inadequate.
Menstrual waste is largely ignored in schools in developing countries, despite it being a significant problem. Menstruation can be a barrier to education for many girls, as a lack of effective sanitary products restricts girls' involvement in educational and social activities.
In Uganda, a majority of girls are at risk for reproductive tract infections (RTIs) because of poor MHM and RTIs can lead to various disabilities if not treated early on.
Sex education is vital to sensitize and create awareness to community members, both male and female, to help them understand that menstruation is a normal biological change every girl experiences.
It is important to establish clubs in communities to extend skills and teach girls how to make their own reusable sanitary towels, especially for those that cannot afford to buy one.
Similarly, community health and nutrition programs can be established to sensitize women and girls on the importance of healthy diets during their menstruation period.
