NYC coronavirus death toll reaches nearly 20,000 in grim milestone

Nearly 20,000 Big Apple residents have now died of confirmed or suspected cases of the coronavirus, according to startling city stats released Sunday.

Some 14,753 New Yorkers have now succumbed to confirmed cases of the contagion, while another 5,178 city dwellers have died from “probable” COVID-19 cases, in which the deceased wasn’t officially tested but displayed telltale symptoms.

All told, 19,931 people across the five boroughs have now lost their lives amid the pandemic, according to the city Department of Health.

Meanwhile, 1,285 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed among city residents between the previous accounting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s 1:45 p.m. update.

A total of 178,766 New York cases have now been confirmed, up from 177,481 just over 24 hours prior.

The grim update came as city and state officials faced a new threat of mysterious symptoms targeting the youngest New Yorkers, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the daily state death toll “still terribly high, but better.”
