{UAH} How Corvid has affected agriculture in Uganda

By Betty Shalom

Fort Portal has food but they lack market. A bunch of matooke at a farm goes for UGX 2,000 and UGX 5,000 in the market. Farmers are requesting the government to inject more money into the agricultural sector so that they do value addition for all their products.

At least Fort Portal they can sell it at 2000. In Bunyangabu District at Kibbiito Market a bunch of matooke which used to be at 30,000/= is now at 1000/= whereas in in Kyotera district a bunch of matooke costs btn 12,000/= and 17,000/=
In Isingiro and Mbarara bunch goes for 500 and 1000shs !! In Kibaale it goes for 2000-3500shs.

This is the question I have been asking myself whether it's really true that agriculture was not affected as the leaders say, how can one sell, a bunch of matooke at 1000-2000, milk in some areas costs is 400 per litre! what can this money buy? You sell a bunch of matooke to buy a packet of salt? So sad! Government should intervene, What is the solution to this! If cooperatives were still around, would they have been helpful on the market part!!

How can they expect a steady market of their produce in a closed economy where there isn't enough money in circulation. It's only a few commercial farmers exporting their produce to foreign markets unlike the local farmers who are relying on domestic market.

Farmers in Teso, Karamoja have chicken but no market for it!
In Butaleja a kilogram of kaiso rice is 1500 ug shs and whereas in Kyoteera it is btn 3500-4000shs

Someone mentioned that tourism might have no meaning at this point yet it is the number one food consumer in hotels and touristic places..
Here in Kampala I used to buy 8 pieces of matooke for 1k but now it's 15_20pieces

The effects of Covid19 are being felt in almost every sector...
