{UAH} Land bought in Uganda during the COVID-19 period null
By Brenda S. Aanyu
Kampala: Government has stopped all land transactions in Uganda until the Covid 19 lock down is lifted.
Betty Kamya, minister of lands, housing and urban development said that any land and land title acquired during the lockdown is considered null and void.
She urged the resident district commissioners and district police commanders to desist from engaging in any land transactions during the lockdown period.
In her address, she made it clear that there should be no land titling, transfers and transactions. With this, she passed a directive that all the no lawyer should handle any land matter during this period.
"Our offices are closed hence police and other authorities should not allow any transaction during this period. Anyone who disobeys should be arrested," said Kamya.
People have been using this lockdown period to get what they left pending done because most of them are not working anymore. Same applies to Roland mujuni who wanted to register his land but failed because there was no one
Roland Mujuni says when he went to register his land tittle he was fortunate to find the land registrar in his office completing the pending work but could not register his land and give him a land title.
"I have been trying to register my land for a long time and I thought I would use this lockdown period to start my construction process," says Mujuni.
Mujuni was told that the office was not registering land because the government stopped land transactions. The registrar went ahead to tell him that the directive was recently passed and working on his request is not would be illegal.
He further told him that much as his land was purchased earlier, he was not exempted from the directive because any land registered when the directive is in place is not considered to be legal.
This comes after the government passed a directive that no land transactions should be carried out during the Covi6-19 period.
With these directives, a lot of people could be saved from dealing with fraudsters who are ready to use this take advantage of the ignorant people during this crisis.
