Voters approve of Trump's handling of protests and back using National Guard: Poll

Voters gave President Trump higher marks than urban mayors for his management of civil unrest and approved of the deployment of National Guard troops to quell riots that have occurred alongside peaceful protests, according to a new poll.

The survey from Remington Research Group, a Republican pollster, revealed 52% of likely voters approve of Trump's handling of "the protests and riots across the country" that erupted in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody. Forty-eight percent said the mayors are doing a better job.

A plurality of voters, 46%, said the protests are justified. But 71% said they support the use of National Guard troops to subdue rioting and looting that has hit cities such as Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, with 26% opposing. The use of troops has been a source of controversy, with some Democratic mayors and liberal activists accusing Trump of turning urban centers into a police state.

The poll surveyed 1,322 likely voters on Wednesday and Thursday and had a margin of error of 2.7 percentage points. The additional findings included:

·         By a margin of 50% to 39%, voters trust Republicans more than Democrats to address the recent protests and rioting.

·         By a margin of 80% to 17%, voters find police officers trustworthy.

·         Opinion over who is to blame for the violence is mixed, with 13% blaming the police, 24% blaming the protesters, 31% blaming antifa, 24% blaming some other group or individual, and 8% saying they were unsure who is responsible.

The poll differed from most recent public polls that have found voters dissatisfied with Trump on the issue of civil unrest as it relates to Floyd's death.
