{UAH} Who is Janet Kataaha Museveni??
Janet is now 72 years old and not planning to retire anytime spoon. She is a daughter to Edward Kataaha and Erina Kyaremeera. Janet testifies she rose up in an average family but short-lived with her father whose demise found her at 7 years. The father was such a great pillar and the bread winner who she says only stopped at P4 but did a church certificate and that he could read and write. Her father worked as a chief which made Janet's family keep rotating in transfers caused by her father's posting to different places as a Chief. She says her mother on the other hand was a housewife devoted Christian who influenced her spiritually to date. She quotes how her mother could fellowship every Wednesday and Friday at a sanctuary which was almost 4 miles away from their home and says they could walk with an oil lamp to go pick her often as she walked back home in the dark. She remembers the passion her father had with the cows as a Muhima Man and that the father knew his cows by name as it is to his Husband.
For sure her love for kids and the vulnerable was induced in her early by her parents she says raised many orphaned children in an extended family setup. She says, this was because her grandfather was head of a clan and her father a patriarch of the clan which made them intimate caretakers.
Janet started her education at Bwongyera where she was in class 1B in 1954. When the father died and the family moved back to Irenga in 1995, she then joined Kitunga Girls School and stayed with Jane who was her cousin. She only stayed in Kitunga for 2 years and when she grew up and was able to walk longer journeys for school, she was enrolled into Kyamate Primary School in P3 at a time her husband was attending Kyamate Boys School in P6. Because Kyamate had classes to P 3, she was relocated and enrolled to Bujaga Girls where she stayed at her cousin's place. She only lived at Bujaga for one year and because it had one additional class of Primary Four, she was taken back to study but this time round at Kyamate Boys School. The mother became empathetic with the longer distance Janet braved morning and evening and had to relocate her to Wamanyonyi which was a boy's school with allowance of enrolling a few girls as was the policy at the time. She sat her P6 exams in this school and left to join Bweranyangi Girls the only girls' Junior Secondary school in the whole of Ankole Region at that time.
She left Bweranyangi Girls and joined nursing after her o-level in 1965 at Mulago School of Nursing under the management of the Makerere Medical School. She was convinced to join nursing by her mother but as a person, nursing was never her dream career. Her fate changed by the return of the late Henry Kainerugaba her brother who convinced their mother that nursing was not good for Janet and that there were better careers than that. She dropped out of nursing and started living with her brother at Entebbe where she secured a job to work at Entebbe airport as a ground steward whose work included ticketing, and helping passengers while checking in.
In 1970, she enrolled to Harlech College in North Wales to study political Science, Philosophy and literature. This college helped her fill the A level gap to join University. After one year, she came back to Uganda and while in Uganda, Amin over through the Obote government and this affected her route back for studies. At this time she stayed at John Kazoora's place in Makindye.
Because of the political instability, Janet left for exile to Kenya in 1972. While in exile in 1973, her mother passed on at a time Janet was 23 years of age. Janet wasn't able to make it to the burial for fear of her life.
Her womanhood and styling was much impacted by 'Omukyaara', Her mother's life style who she admired and emulated from the way she kept her home, Christian fellowshipping, general lady conduct and humor for children and vulnerable as a product of an extended family.
This is one reason why Janet founded many charity organization that give back to vulnerable groupings like orphans, women, elderly and youth.
It was in Kenya that Janet met President Museven who had come for a meeting at a hotel in Narobi on the Christmas of 1972. They had earlier met while Janet was at Kyamate Girls and Museven was at Kyamate Boys but as children at a time, Yoweri was in grade 6 and Janet was in Grade 3 classes. They again met at Entebbe airport and chatted for a while at a time Janet working as a ground steward.
Her marriage with his best friend didn't just come from no ware. It was after a long time relationship characterized with continued, chatting, visits, storytelling and cracking jokes which was grown over a period of time and concluded in England with a wedlock. It is on record that at the time of Janet's stay in Nairobi in Amini was president, Yoweri made calls almost 2-3 times a day to detail Janet about his daily activities a thing he has done to-date as a husband.
She says it was indeed a great sacrifice for calls which were rear those and too expensive.
As Museveni embarked on his revolutionary Mission, Janet was at his comfort for, she helped to organize Yoweri's social life especially the dressing code to befit the activities Museveni was to accomplish. In Tanzania he was always casual and while travelling to Uganda, she had to help him look militant as he was travelling on missions of recruitments.
Janet braved feeding the family in Tanzania for 5 month as Yoweri was on the liberation struggle for Uganda in 1979 to see the over through of Amini's government. Yoweri only appeared back to the family after government had been overthrown to pick Janet back to Uganda.
After Amin's over throw, they short leaved in Uganda as the country went through a time of tension of the 1980 elections where his husband was a candidate. She says when elections were rigged; they returned to Kampala and found that their house had been reallocated to soother person by the minister of defense. Janet's Family with her kids' left for Kenya as tension in Kampala increased.
They stayed in Nairobi and on learning that they were on a hunt by the Obote government, organized with the Swedish ambassador and flee to Sweden for refuge.
Janet holds a Bachelors in Education from Makerere University a course that befits her core values of Humanity instilled to her by her parents. This has helped her to work and complement lives of many vulnerable groups ranging through charities like UWESO that has formidable work that has given hope to many orphaned children. She stated UWESO after her visit in Luweero where she found many orphans whose status had either been the war or the escalating HIV at the time. It was after her empathetic motive that attracted many NGO in the country to supplement on the work she had started.
When Janet found out that UWESO was now a stable NGO dealing with orphans, she embarked on rural women empowerment and so stated the National Strategy for the Advancement of Rural Women in Uganda to promote Women Economically. Here she targeted issues of family Healthy, Stability, Nutrition, HIV/AIDS trough training and support.
All after being done, she clearly puts is up that God's voice sounded to her to join elective politics and so Janet in 2006 stood up for the Ruhaama Parliamentary seat on discontent with her husband the president. Her major focus was to help put a stone to the people of the area who had a poor representation by the FDC incumbent.
As Mp and through Christians from Argentina, she was able to raise over a million Dollars for developing Ruhaama. She spent money on Road improvement by purchase of Road construction machinery with the rest of the money used to start a micro finance.
Her term also helped in constructing of some classrooms in schools in the constituency particularly the construction of Kabuhome Primary School from money raised when she organized a Dinner for the development of the constituency together with some American friends.
As area Mp, she was able to extend loans to over 192 women groups, 95 men groups, 150 youth groups, distributed 1,278 Nanny goats, 48 Billy goats, 30 heifers and so many projects. After setting pace as area Mp, she declined standing in the 2016 election after a 2 terms service It was because of the sense of humor and love for humanity that her husband appointed her Karamoja Minister to have this area fostered and developed. She became instrumental in improving health units in the area, Encouraging girls' child education in the area, improving and provision of water in this region and advocacy for resettlement of the nomadic styled Karamojangos Her virgue and determination to work for the good of the locals won her the best fitting credentials to run the most crucial social service providing ministry where she has impacted much ate a short time. She has helped to shape the entire ministry through;
