{UAH} Gen Tumukunde in trouble for fleecing Coca-Cola boss Shs1.5b
Presidential hopeful Gen Henry Tumukunde is in trouble after a businessman accused him of fleecing his company of more than Shs1.5 billion in a purported land sale.
Hajj Mohammed Magid Bagalaaliwo, a real estate dealer alleges that in September 2007, he advanced USD 400,000 (about Shs1.5 billion) to the former Security minister as partial payment for purchase of 25 acres of land at Kachanga landing site, Port Bell Village-Luzira in Nakawa Division, Kampala.
At the time of paying the money, Hajj Bagalaaliwo says that Gen Tumukunde who on Wednesday launched his presidential bid for the 2021 elections was reportedly a serving military officer at the rank of Brigadier.
Addressing the media at his residence in Kololo, a Kampala suburb, Hajj Bagalaaliwo said Gen Tumukunde whom he described as his neighbor convinced him that he had a National Environement management Authority (NEMA) certificate issued to him through his company Fish Eagle Limited and that a certificate of title would soon be granted by Kampala District Land Board.
He said Gen tumukunde who was armed with papers told him that he was in possession of the land but had deployed his veterans to guard it and protect his interests on land.
"I visited the land in issue accompanied by my wife and guided by Morris Nuwagaba, a real property agent. After visiting and inspecting the land, I negotiated with Gen Tumukunde in presence of his wife and pleaded he with me that he had just been released from prison and he lacked money to send his children back to the United Kingdom where they had been studying. That he needed money quickly to enable him pay for the fees, transport fares and other requirements of his children while they would be at school in the UK," Hajj Bagalaaliwo said.
He explained that after a protracted negotiation, he and Tumukunde signed a purchase agreement for the land at the price of Shs1.8 billion for which he through his company Trustnak Finance Limited paid a deposit of USD 400,000 in the presence of their wives, lawyers and another real estate dealer Nuwagaba who brokered the deal.
To his surprise, Hajj Bagalaaliwo also the chairman of Coca Cola Company said that it later turned out that Tumukunde had never applied for the said land and that he made personal commitments to pay back the money.
"In a nutshell, Gen Tumukunde had obtained money from me as the managing director of my company Trustnak Finance Limited, through fraud, by falsely pretending that he had applied for land from Kampala District Land Board whereas it was not true," Hajj Bagalaaliwo said.

He added: "I am therefore appealing to the President Museveni to cause the prosecution of Gen Tumukunde for the crimes of disgraceful and scandalous conduct of a serving officer of Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces as on September 3, 2007. Brigadier Tumukunde defrauded me of USD 400,000 purposely to sell me land which he did not own or had equitable expectaction of ownership."
Efforts by this reporter to get a comment from Gen Tumukunde were futile as he did not answer all the known mobile telephone lines by the time of filing this report.
When contacted, Nuwagaba who was ago between Hajj Bagalaaliwo and Gen Tumukunde, described the incident as an fortunate saying that the two worrying parties are both his friends.
"I introduced the Gen to Hajj after knowing that the Gen was selling two pieces of land in Luzira and Kayunga. I was not party to their negotiations but we delivered the dollars 400000 to his home and he paid me a commission of dollars 10000,"said Nuwagaba adding that he did not expect Gen Tumukunde, being a high placed person to behave the way he did.
According to Nuwagaba, Gen Tumukunde throughout all the negotiation meetings promised to pay back the money but in vain.
