{UAH} MAO SHOULD RESIGN

By Mustapha Semanda Magero
What really disappoints me about Nobert Mao is that he has spent all his time as a DP president begging to be 'liked' instead of focusing on rebuilding the party. Instead of delegating and utilising the talented politicians he had, he was busy insulting and fighting those he perceived to be his enemies. Good leaders aim to be respected not liked. He just needed to come up with projects that could bring about unity and delegate as much as possible. For example, he could have embarked on a nationwide campaign to fundraise money to build DP headquarters and assigned this task to mainly his perceived 'enemies' - at the end of the day he would have taken the credit for it.

I also never understood why he refused politicians such as Mp Bakireke Nambooze to mobilise and build party structures in her central region. It seems like Mao is a coward who doesn't want other leaders to be more popular than him. As a leader, Mao needed to understand what motivates his high profile MPs and then help them stay motivated not to 'stifle' and verbally abuse them in public.

I remember when Erias Lukwago and others were at the constitutional court in Mbale battling the government. I was extremely disappointed that Mao never attended even to show support or rally his troops. He's always missing in action and fighting petty wars.
How can one keep verbally abusing his top 'commanders' in public like calling them 'dikulas' and then claim that he would like to work with them. Some of these people like Lukwago, Medard, Nambooze, Kivumbi have done a lot. Mao just needed to show that he appreciates their efforts and that the party needs them. Leaders have to be humble and appreciate any contributions made by their members especially those that have dedicated their life fighting for the party. Some have been constantly humiliated, beaten and imprisoned on a regular basis fighting for us all not to mention contributing financially to the party.

Good leaders need to be tolerant not arrogant, empowering not disempowering, unifying, humble, good listeners, good learners, good mobilisers, good at spotting talented individuals and recruiting them.
I might be wrong but Mao has never recruited any top politician from any of the big parties - instead other parties are fishing from DP. This is very demoralizing!! That's why I strongly believe that Mao should find an exit strategy and resign as soon as possible. If this was football, he 'lost the dressing room'. As a leader, you cannot be seen always fighting your high performing MPs or members in public- it tells a lot about his personality. He's either a naturally jealous man or indirectly helping the government to kill off the Democratic Party. Whenever he's criticised, he plays the old boring tribal card. If Mao is very popular and a good strategic, how many MPs does DP have from the Northern region where Mao comes from?
He has failed to prove himself as a competent and effective modern leader. The popular and high performing MPs or the members he has been fighting are mostly self made so he needed to be respectful and humble whilst dealing with them.
NB. Being humble is not a weakness - it's a strength as long as one achieves his/her objectives.
