Miria Matembe has this morning declared she will be rejoining Parliament as a female representative of the elderly persons at the national level. Parliament recently approved creation of 5 MP positions specifically for the elderly; four of whom will be regional representative. To further strengthen women participation and ensure gender inclusiveness, one position has been ring-fenced strictly for a female representative.

Matembe, who between 1989 and 2006 excelled as district woman MP for Mbarara district, says she is back to use the platform to revitalize advocacy around issues affecting the elderly who she says have lately become very vulnerable to many afflictions including physical violence directed at them by their grandchildren seeking to inherit property.

"I last night watched on TV how a child killed an elderly person in Ibanda simply because she hadn't allocated him property. There are lots of affliction targeting the elderly and it's what I'm coming to be a voice for and give hope to that cluster of society," Matembe said in a Monday interview with Mulengera News. "I'm ready to use this big mouth of mine just like I did for gender equality where I'm one of the pioneers. I'm in this for nothing else but to give hope and a voice to that cluster of society. The situation is similar to what happened in the Book of Exodus where God heard the cries of his people and sent them Moses. In Uganda's case, God has heard the cries of the elderly in this country and has sent me to come and rescue them. He has got me out of the desert where I have been waiting from while doing my own things and the good Lord said to me come and be the voice of the elderly."
