{UAH} EVEN IF JOE BIDEN WINS HE HAS BEEN DENIED A MANDATE

Voters just denied the Left a mandate

The final results of the 2020 election may not be known for days or even weeks. But one thing is clear — it was a defeat of the far Left.

Those who want to change the United States fundamentally and radically to advance left-wing priorities had a pretty clear goal for this election. They wanted Joe Biden to be elected in a landslide, with many Democrats riding on his coattails to expand their House majority and gain solid control of the Senate. Once in power, activists would claim a mandate for their ideas and push Biden in a more liberal direction as they push to abolish the filibuster and pack the Supreme Court.

Yet as of this writing, the most likely outcome is that Biden will win with razor-thin margins in a few states; that Democrats will lose seats in the House; and that Republicans will maintain control of the Senate. In the worst case for Democrats, President Trump could ride a narrow path to victory. But at best for Democrats, they will come to Washington with a 50-50 Senate and centrists will be the tie-breaking votes.

This is not the position from which to nuke the filibuster, pack the courts, ban fracking, dramatically expand Obamacare, implement the Green New Deal, and so on.

In races across the country, voters rejected the left-wing agenda. They may have moved away from Trump because they were turned off by him personally, but they also resisted the chance to give Biden a blank check. The Democratic Party has paid the price for allowing itself to be taken over in large part by extremists, such as the avowed socialists Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whom the nationwide electorate does not want setting policy and exercising power.

Trump’s victories in Florida and Ohio, as well as the tightness in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, suggest there is a significant number of voters who were reluctant about Biden, whatever their feelings about Trump. The bifurcation of the Democratic Party, in which its presidential nominee took on the guise of a centrist at first, then adopted the policies of the far-left wing, then lurched back toward the center for appearance's sake, shows the strains within the left-wing coalition. These will cause Democrats problems again and again in future, for voters are not being allowed to know plainly what the party stands for. It tries to win by sleight of hand and by concealing what it is rather than by setting out its stall and making its case for election. This is no way to engender public trust.

The pushback against progressivism was also evident in state-level ballot races as well. In liberal California, voters exempted Lyft and Uber from an onerous, job-killing law that tried to force independent drivers to become company employees so as to make them easier prey for unions. Democrats' relative failure on the national level means that Biden's promise to sign that same destructive measure into federal law is dead on arrival. So are his promises to abolish all state right-to-work laws, and so is Kamala Harris's plan to have Congress repeal all abortion regulation.

California voters also chose to maintain the state’s ban on using affirmative action in hiring and college admissions decisions.

In liberal Illinois, voters rejected an effort by liberal Gov. J.B. Pritzker to enact a graduated income tax, which would have paved the way to a massive tax hike.

Whatever happens from here out, Biden's is not likely to become the sort of presidency in which Ocasio-Cortez gets to dictate the agenda. Instead, expect to see centrists such as Sens. Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, and Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, get a much bigger say in what becomes law.
