{UAH} PROXY VOTING SCHEME IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL

Nancy Pelosi's proxy-voting scheme is unconstitutional

The public expects elected representatives to engage in debate, exchange ideas, and work to find solutions to the problems of the day. As our country continues to rebound from the global pandemic, our leaders in Congress play an essential role in giving their constituents a voice. With millions returning to work and millions more wanting to return, so too is it possible for members of Congress to work in a safe and responsible environment on behalf of our citizens during these trying times.

Nancy Pelosi seemingly believes the exact opposite. Congressional Democrats have already been taking steps to expand Pelosi’s unconstitutional proxy voting scheme — adopted on a strictly party-line basis this past May — and institute an unproven and insecure “text to vote” voting system. Not only would such a scheme make it difficult, if not impossible, to guarantee the vote cast actually belongs to the representative supposedly casting it, preventing members from seeing each other is Pelosi’s means of stifling her own caucus to preserve her tenuous hold on the speakership.

In short, with this desperate Stalin-esque move, Pelosi is yet again putting politics ahead of the American people.

Instead of working to find solutions, Pelosi’s time is spent crafting an unconstitutional system designed to prevent blowback against her party’s radical socialist policies. By rigging the process to shield her party from important policy debates and questions from the Capitol Hill press corps, this undemocratic move silences the voices of millions of Americans and overturns centuries of House precedent. It’s akin to the Chinese Communist Party using technology to control party members and their people.

The electronic voting system currently used in the House chamber took three years to design, test, and implement. It operates on a closed system unconnected to the internet to ensure vote tabulations are not manipulated by cyberattacks. Conversely, what Pelosi is seeking to implement makes the system of voting in the House vulnerable to such attacks.

We have already seen House Democrats abuse proxy voting to skip work. In fact, nearly 70 Democrats failed to show up in person for this summer’s “emergency session” on the U.S. Postal Service. Moving to an unproven system of “text to vote” remote voting would further this abuse and allow representatives to stay home, all while being paid by the taxpayers.

Rest assured, congressional Republicans will not go along with this scheme quietly, and we will remain focused on solving problems and working on behalf of the voters who sent us to Washington.
