Junior Environment Minister Beatrice Anywar has propagated Cabinet colleague Amelia Kyambadde's view that the only way the ruling NRM party can mitigate and soften anger and resentment in the population is by quickly effecting some leadership renewal at the very top which many have construed as a veiled demand for Gen President, ruler of Uganda for the last 35 years, to consider not standing again for the top job.
The broader implication of all this ideological realignment is that the next five years must be used to identify a successor and new leader for the National Resistance Movement with higher chances of overcoming the Kyagulanyi wave in 2026. What the two Ministers are saying is consistent with Government Spokesman Zephaniah Ofwono Opondo who recently announced that finding a successor will be top priority for the NRM in the 2021-2026 period since he doesn't expect a candidate Museveni on the ballot paper of 2026.

Speaking to a Kampala TV channel live from her Kyambogo home, Anywar (barely three years into NRM membership having defected from FDC) said her own Thursday 11th January defeat by FDC's under 30 Denis Onekalit had caused to reflect on the futility of the old guard like herself attempting to cling on governing a population that clearly doesn't like them anymore.
She has been newly created Kitgum Municipality MP since its operationalization in 2016 (having started out as Kitgum Woman MP 2006-2016) but was politically electrocuted by the FDC candidate during the Thursday 14th January elections. Anywar adds that, having realized the resentment the population has towards long-serving politicians like herself, she can't even waste her time challenging the results by going to court.
In the same vein, Anywar implied that Gen Museveni (her leader in NRM) should equally read the bold writing on the wall and begin preparing his exit from the Presidency before it's too late. Implying that she expects this to be Gen Tibuhaburwa's final term, Anywar said: "There is a clear revolution of the young people against the elderly. The wave of the youth and change is brewing everywhere. Even we in the NRM must shed off. How do we keep relevant as NRM? Mzee Wakazi (M7) has done his part and we need (him) to step aside and begin to advise (the young ones)."
Anywar said, having been MP since 2006 when the Kizza Besigye wave of that year picked her from political obscurity, she is now working towards personal political retirement. That to avoid misunderstood for a political nomad, she will be remaining an elderly NRM supporter without ever joining any other political formation. She also referenced on the return of peace in her native Acholi-Land and normalization of life as people returned from IDPs (all of which was enabled by Gen Museveni) to justify why she can't regret her defection into NRM after a prolonged stint in FDC.
