{UAH} HE WILL WEEP: CITY SCRIBE JOHN NJOROGE ASKED TO PAY 1BN FOR DEFAMING STELLA NYANZI

By Mulengera Reporters

When he recently posted stuff on his Facebook page alleging things against Dr. Stella Nyanzi and big-name city lawyer Isaac Semakadde, city journalist John Njoroge didn't know what awaited him. The two people (Nyanzi Semakadde), who he accused of collecting millions of shillings for the purchase of pads to enable girls from poor families to remain in school and subsequently failing to put the proceeds to appropriate use, have since taken the legal path aimed at making the Kenyan journalist regret his actions.

They have instructed city law firm, GEM Advocates, to legally pursue Njoroge to atone the damage and detriment his uncorroborated social media attacks have caused to their reputation.  In their one page notice of intension to sue, dated Thursday 11th March 2021, the lawyers have demanded that Njoroge pays Shs1bn, apologize and pull down his impugned Facebook post or else gets sued to his own detriment and peril.

Njoroge, whose predicament could prompt many others towards more responsible usage of the social media space, is also being required to disclose the NGOs and different other donors from whom the Shs80m, he accuses the two of misappropriating, was collected. He is implored to prepare to meet with his victims in court where a platform will be accorded to him to corroborate his very damaging assertions. That should he fail to come through doing the things the lawyers are asking him to on behalf of their clients, the controversial Njoroge shouldn't expect any further notification before a defamation suit is filed against him in civil courts.

A Kenyan national initially practicing very productive journalism in Uganda, Njoroge first attracted public attention in the late 2000s as an investigative journalist at Andrew Mwenda's then very daring Independent news magazine where he personally executed a special project that saw him expose state security agencies over torture and violation of citizens' human rights in safe houses.

And riding on the resultant fame, Njoroge won awards here and there before being snatched to work for Monitor newspaper where he had an equally productive journalism practice before controversially exiting mainstream media. He these days remains an influential user of social media and an opinion shaper too. Njoroge was on Friday 26th March personally served the notice implying he is now fully aware of what is being required of him if he is to avoid being sued and subjected to full court proceedings which can be costly.
