Meghan Markle’s father insists royal family is not racist

Meghan Markle’s estranged dad, Thomas Markle, said he doesn’t believe the royal family is racist — insisting a member’s alleged remark about the darkness of her and Prince Harry’s son was likely just a “dumb question.”  

“I have great respect for the royals, and I don’t think the British royal family are racist at all. I don’t think the British are racist, I think Los Angeles is racist, California is a racist, but I don’t think the Brits are,” Markle, 76, said Tuesday on ITV’s “Good Morning Britain.”

“The thing about what color will the baby be or how dark will the baby be — I’m guessing and hoping it’s just a dumb question from somebody … It could be somebody asked a stupid question. Rather than being a total racist,” he insisted.

“This whole thing about color and how dark the baby is, is bull—,” Markle said, adding that he thought the remark should be investigated.

However, at the same time, Thomas Markle said he was upset by his daughter’s account of feeling suicidal after joining the royal family in 2018.

“Had I known she had psychological problems, I would have been there for her,” he said, but claimed that Meghan had “pretty much ghosted” her family in the US and “she really had no one to reach out to.”

In a stunning revelation aired Sunday night, the Duchess of Sussex, 39, told Oprah Winfrey that while she was pregnant with Archie — the couple’s first child — someone in the royal family raised “concerns” over how dark the baby’s skin might be.

On Monday, Winfrey confirmed that neither Queen Elizabeth nor her husband, Prince Philip, were involved in the conversation about Archie’s skin color — but Harry refused to reveal who in the royal family did share those concerns.

Meghan also claimed her now-1-year-old son had been denied the title of prince because of the concerns about “about how dark his skin might be when he’s born” — a claim that has since been rebutted.

Thomas Markle, a former lighting director for American soaps and sitcoms, separated from Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, when his daughter was young. He now lives in Mexico.

Asked further about the explosive interview his daughter and son-in-law gave to Oprah, Markle said “they went way over the top,” and should have waited, considering that Prince Philip was still in the hospital after undergoing a heart procedure.

“They should have waited, considering the queen’s age and Philip’s age,” he said. The Queen is 94 while the Duke of Edinburgh is 99.
