{UAH} MUST I REGISTER MY MARRIAGE WITH ANYONE?
MUST I REGISTER MY MARRIAGE WITH ANYONE?
The simple answer is that it depends on the type of marriage that you entered. Under the customary marriages, once you have fulfilled what the culture requires, you are married. Therefore, registration is only useful for purposes of proof.
On the other hand, there are marriages that require registration to be taken as lawful. An example of these are civil and religious marriages where a marriage must be registered in the Marriage Register.
DO YOU NEED TO REGISTER ANYWAY?
We would suggest that you do. Even if non-registration does not invalidate the marriage you entered, it may be a good idea for you to register for these reasons;
1.If your partner attempts to remarry, then the official marriage register will show that he/she is "Not Single and Searching". Therefore, registration will save you from having to fight at the church door to be allowed in on the wedding day to stop the ceremony.
2.In case you need to access NSSF, your spouse's bank account or even taking over from your deceased spouse, some banks and offices may require official proof that you are indeed married. This proof can only be given if there is official registration.
