{UAH} PREPAID YAKA SERVICE CHARGE MUST BE ABOLISHED:

By Augustine Ruzindana

PREPAID YAKA SERVICE CHARGE MUST BE ABOLISHED:

I saw a defence on TV by Uneme's PRO regarding various arbitrary deductions Umeme makes from Consumers payments. One of them is a service charge made on purchase of Yaka units. The service of Umeme is provision of electricity and a consumer prepays the relevant electricity unit tariff rate; what other service is the "Service Charge" for? During the time when it was necessary to read meters and then deliver Bills and sometimes cut off power, a service charge could be justified. Now most consumers prepay for Yaka units and actually lend money to Umeme. What is the service other than electricity provided?

In fact if your consumption is low and say you buy Yaka units after 3 months, Umeme will charge "Service" charges for three months so that if you buy Yaka units for 10,000= you may get 0 or 1 unit.

Umeme Service Charge is carried over from Postpaid power consumption arrangements and should be abolished under Prepaid Yaka arrangements.
