You might be right but not necessarily so.
In Seasons of Immigration to North novel, the main character, a professor of economics/development economics committed several crimes in Europe and escaped back home in Sudan and settled in a remote village where nobody knew him.
His crime was killing his white girlfriends after few months of intensive sex. He used to say, "I will liberate Africa with my penis." He murdered every white lady he befriended until he became a prime suspect but before his luck ran out, he escaped back to Sudan.
He passed for a villager in a mud house which nobody ever entered. One season there was a flood which was so destructive. But this "villager" used remarkable strategies to save his village. He was loved by the entire community but aroused keen interest in one undergraduate student who started observing the guy.
The young man drew closer to him and one time when they worked in the field, the "villager" started whistling an English lyrics, "Fifteen men in a dead man's chest, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.... " He was so delighted and forgot that he was a local "villager. " The boy exclaimed and threatened to report him if he did not tell him the truth. Surprised and panicky, he led the boy to his mud hut and asked if he could be trusted to keep a secret to which the boy happily promised to uphold. Inside the hut, one room led to another and to a library. Like it is common with most scholars, books are the first attraction so the boy was drawn to the book shelves. He saw the exact textbooks he used for economics course and the author was that "villager!" the boy was humbled to be in the company of a great scholar, a professor in his village!
In Teso, one rich man's herdsman was later recognized as a police CID when the rich man was arrested for killing and burying a man whom he accused of loving his third wife. After three years of loyal work as a herdsman, the man requested to go back to his home to check on his wife and worried that she might have got other men already. The rich man advised him not to worry, told him to go home at night and if he found an intruder he could kill him bury inside the hut, order the woman to smear the floor with cow dung and leave before dawn then go back after one week, day time. He claimed that nobody would ever suspect him, and even said that he did such a thing and to that date nobody ever knew anything.
Unknowingly, he had reveled what the "herdsman" was investigating. The herdsman went home, " to the police station" and before he could know it, police were at his door and excavation of the floors started and, "quack," bones and skull of a man exhumed! That made many herdsmen lose their jobs in Teso especially if nobody knew where they came from.
However, today due to unemployment, immigration and refugee situations, many highly educated people end up doing such jobs, they are not spies.
I know the part of this story that my friends here like most! Look up that book, it's good pastime.
