{UAH} *If we have all chosen to become scavengers, who will survive & who will save another?*

By Muhimbise George

Success doesn't mean the powerful to mistreat the vulnerable, but the ability to understand the vulnerable and coexist with them in a large system of interdependence.

Because of ecosystem we live in a symbiotic world where we exchange carbondioxide for oxygen with plants that we grow which in turn give us food. Our waste products form manure that feed the plants, the story of ecosystem is an unending cycle in which each of us benefits the other!

Without the poor, the rich lack people to work for them as maids or askaris, so without the rich, the poor will have no job, without customers we have no traders, without the sick doctors are jobless without the illiterate the teachers are useless, without sinners religious leaders are jobless, all is a puzzle of a cycle that goes round and comes around!

In the story of Noah in the Bible, two sexes of each specie of animals were placed in a boat for 120 days; a cat and rat, an antelope & a lion, an eagle & chicken etc found themselves in the same boat for survival. They co-existed until the end of crisis, no animal feasted on the other!

If a lion had feasted on an antelope, the antelopes would be no more and the lions would in future lack food and extinct; if the cat had feasted on a rat, the rats would extinct and shortly the cats would perish for they would face starvation, if the eagle had eaten the chicken, the future eagles would have no meal for the chicken would never be there. Therefore somehow the animals saw a reason to coexist amidst the crisis!

Today Uganda faces Covid 19 crisis where unfortunately the government that should address the crisis has turned into a pandemic it'self!

The health workers and hospitals that would save lives have turned a crisis into a business by hyping treatment of Covid to a level of demanding 5million per day.

In normal days oxygen that would go for 200,000 shs is being  charged as high as five million as if it is imported from heaven!

The bus operators and tax drivers tripled transport costs the moment schools were closed and mercilessly looked on as innocent children got stranded in tax parks. Do these transport operators have moral authority to condemn the doctors for charging exhorbitantly?  You greedy transporters, If you can't be merciful to such innocent kids, then why shouldn't the banks arrest you for their loans?

The school administrators, we understand your pain, but do you as well understand the pain of the parents? To the directors who charged full school fees even for children who spent only one week at school, do you see value for money? Are you remorseful for cheating parents by taking advantage of the pandemic? If you can't listen to your clients, why should government listen to your cries?

To the land Lords who are evicting people out of their houses when they are not working, a situation beyond their control are you having all your senses? Are you being reasonable? Do you have moral authority to blame government for overtaxing you when you can't treat your tenants with courtesy?

The security officials extorting money from people who are looking for survival, do you deserve to be promoted? Do you deserve salary increment when you can't live up to your code of conduct? Do you deserve to blame your bosses for stealing billions at the top yet you are stealing thousands at your lower levels?

Our country has degenerated, our moral fabric has decayed to the marrow, from the boda boda cyclists who drive on pavements to tax drivers who drive past traffic lights; from kindergartens which charge kids with heaps of reams of papers & kilos of sugar that they never consume to the teachers that cheat exams for learners!

From Members of Parliament with forged academic papers to the citizens that sell their votes, from pastors that sell fake miracles to telcom companies that cheat clients on data, from money lenders that grab their clients' properties to a government that borrows without plan, from leaders that have turned into dealers to those they lead that never question their leaders, from a government that has become helpless to an opposition that does not give hope!

From judges that sell justice to the students that sell sex for marks, from the police officers that sell police bond, to doctors that steal from patients, from the traders that cheat their clients to the workers that cheat their bosses!

Helplessly we stand, with many questions than answers, man eat man as a guiding principle in a nation that has lost direction, with a senile dictator that has lost touch with reality, unfortunately who purpots to bear a vision yet we see darkness at the end of the tunnel!

In a nutshell, we have chosen to live as scavengers and to feast on one another like vultures, we have lived a savagery life where we all walk in wickedness, we blame others yet we are worse in our small positions. We aught to change our ways or we perish because what one sows so he will reap and the leaders we blame are a reflection of a society they lead!
