{UAH} Why would a Canadian want to leave Canada to live in the USA, when Canada ranks number 1 in the quality of life ranking and the USA ranks number 17?

I moved from Canada to a very nice part of the USA, Orange County CA and spent 10 good years there. I was offered my dream job and was paid for doing my hobby. I was even approved for a green card but came back in 2010 to care for my elderly mother.

The reality of things is that over 90% of the USA is a nice place to live and as long as one earns an income that places them above the 30th percentile income level that the medical insurance issue is rarely a factor. It is mainly the bottom 30% that have issues. Where I lived in California, it was just as safe as any place in Canada and I never felt threatened in any way.

I still have many good friends in the USA and I cherish the memory of the time that I lived there.

As for ranking of quality of life one has to remember that many of those things do not affect everyone equally. When it comes to say child mortality, yes it is higher in the USA but that is largely in the bottom 30% of the population. The figure for the upper 50% is as good as in Canada. My income placed me in the top 25%. This issue with the people with lower incomes is an issue with the US having greater inequality. But it was not my place as a guest worker there to force a change. The US people have to fix that themselves.

My point is, that the figures get skewed badly downward for the USA as they have much greater inequality than Canada. But for the majority, life is decent in the US.
