Chinese supermarkets are increasing
The recent announcement about the exit of Shoprite from Uganda, joining Nakumat and Uchumi, has created an interesting debate in the country.
Some people opine that the exit will give the local supermarkets a chance to grow while others think the economy and conditions have not favoured the foreign players.
But have we thought about the increase in Chinese supermarkets opening up in and around the Kampala suburbs? In Kasangati, there is one such supermarket and I have seen one in Makindye towards Kibuye.
Could the Chinese have thought ahead of the other supermarkets that exited and decided to move close
to the customers in their localities? Where does that leave the Ugandan- owned supermarkets?
We have focused on the exit of foreign supermarkets and ignored the mushrooming Chinese supermarkets.
