{UAH} FOOD INSECURITY IN A VERY FERTILE LAND OF UGANDA

Friends

Can you explain how such a fertile country like Uganda can get this kind of story? Can you explain how a country like Uganda that holds millions of refugees from other countries and feeds them fails to feed its own children to  this level. Uganda has enough food to feed its self, for if it can supply food to Toronto twice a week, surely there has to be food at home. Uganda fails to self-feed for only two reasons, much of the fertile land in our country is owned by a bunch of lazies in the North, that leave it unused to come to Kampala and sit in Acholi quarters. We all know that flat land is always the most fertile land, why has Acholi to this day failed to grow the food to feed the entire continent?

The second point is the most important one, the rest of the fertile land in the south, that we use to grow the food to feed society, is largely owned by Rwandans like Allan Barigye. And this is extremely important for everyone to understand. The Allan Barigye’s have absolutely no value let alone interest into feeding Uganda kids. When you get a piece of land in Buganda and hand it to a firkin Rwandan, like Allan Barigye, he will use it to benefit the population in Byumba before it benefits the Uganda kids. He does that by growing food for export than domestic used.

I need someone in Uganda like Annett to get a moment and audit what companies export food from Uganda, who owns them, who grows the food, and who do they export it to. If you are honest in your audit with yourself you, will find exactly what the rest of us know, food export from Uganda is managed by Rwandans like Allan Barigye. When you fail to manage the growth and supply of food in a country you will end up with kids as this one in the photograph. That child is going to become a permanent problem to the country for he has grown up malnourished.

The difference between Indians and Rwandans like Allan Barigye is that Indians never actually controlled what we grew let alone how we sold it. Rwandans like Allan Barigye actually do, and this is exactly what we have in the country. With that back ground, please explain to me why we exterminated the Indians out of Uganda but it is racist to exterminate Rwandans. Understand the danger of Rwandans like Allan Barigye as you protect them in that country, you are protecting them as your own Ugandan firkin children are starving to death, then wonder if they would do that to their own kids in firkin Byumba.  -> Allow that to sink in.

Find lasting solution to food insecurity

Tuesday, December 28, 2021

What you need to know

We reiterate the request for relief aid made by the residents and district leaders but also ask the government to find a long-term solution to the problem of food insecurity besides handing out food to the affected communities.

A total of 100,000 residents of Kibuku District are facing food shortage caused by a dry spell that affected crop performance (see Daily Monitor, December 24, 2021, “Hunger bites Kibuku locals”).
For these unfortunate citizens, there was nothing merry about Christmas as their bellies grumbled on what is ordinarily supposed to be a day of feasting on sumptuous meals.

The district LC5 chairperson, Mr Mohammed Nakeba, told a district council meeting recently that families in the most affected sub-counties of Lyatama, Kasasira, Buseta, Kenkebu, Bulangira, and Kibuku Town Council have one meal a day.

A father of six, James Mpande, said they are surviving on porridge and urged the government to quickly come to their rescue.
We reiterate the request for relief aid made by the residents and district leaders but also ask the government to find a long-term solution to the problem of food insecurity besides handing out food to the affected communities.

A major cause of food insecurity is the high rate of post-harvest losses caused by poor handling of harvested crops.
Aflatoxins produced by fungi that invade crops that are poorly stored render them unfit for human consumption.
This forces the farmer to throw away the contaminated crops, causing food shortage besides financial losses.

To prevent this, farmers should be educated on proper handling and storage of harvested crops.
Over dependence on rain for agriculture is a big hindrance to efforts to make communities food secure. Climate change has led to widespread changes in weather patterns, causing drought that wither crops.

To mitigate this, the government should scale up efforts to boost irrigation on farms. Government should consider giving farmers interest-free or low-interest loans to enable them purchase irrigation equipment.
Agricultural extension officers should be sent to the grassroots to educate farmers about crop irrigation.
In areas that are drought-prone, consideration should be given to introducing drought-resistant, fast maturing crops.

Much more needs to be done to curb climate change. Wetlands, forests and water bodies should be conserved. Those found guilty of degrading the environment should be given severe penalties to curb the rampant vice. Furthermore, the law should not be selectively applied.

Through implementation of the above proposals, Uganda can utilize its vast arable lands to produce enough crops to feed its citizens and surplus to export to other countries.
