The EAC must abandon border COVID testing

The East African Community is the best policy decision that the member states took. Despite a few indiscreet trade spats, the citizens of the member states have strong support for the economic union. 

I was heartened that the DRC may be on a fast track to join the community. That would make the East African Community one of the biggest trading blocs in Africa. The benefits to the citizens are immense. 

However, in this short essay, I argue how foolish it is to impose unwise border snafu concerning the covid-19 testing of drivers of trucks. This is totally unacceptable and unnecessary. There is no scientific evidence that truck drivers are spreading the virus. At this stage of the pandemic, let's accept that there are widespread community infections. If you are living in Uganda and know the behavior of Ugandans, you won't restrict vehicular movements. 

I urge authorities in Uganda and other member states to avoid shooting themselves in the foot. These trade barriers hurt the citizens, driving up the costs of doing business while providing little benefits. 

It's totally unnecessary to test drivers at the border. It is not scientific. It's not necessary. It does not benefit anyone.
