{UAH} Mystery cases of Bribery and Corruption at NUP
The National Unity Platform (NUP) officials had roundly rejected any suggestion that the party's flag was up for sale to moneyed political aspirants. But later, there came a detailed, new admission from NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine. To contain the harsh criticism and growing anger over claims of extortion within the party, Kyagulanyi publicly admitted that some officials in the NUP rank and file were extorting money from local government and parliamentary aspirants to support their bid to become party flag bearers in the 2021 general election.
Bobi Wine's brothers, Eddie Yawe and Fred Nyanzi have been on several occasions accused of engaging in cases of favoritism, bribery and nepotism during the flagbearer selection process at the party. Recently, Jinja district National Unity platform-NUP registrar Saul Nsongambi was relieved of his duties, his troubles stemmed from complaints presented by NUP members who accused him of soliciting bribes before being declared party flag bearers. The complainants who are mainly aspiring councilors alleged that the bribes which range from 500,000-1,000,000 Shillings undermine the core values of democracy.
NUP flag bearers are not chosen through an internal election like most political parties in Uganda are doing and this may cost the party a benefit of doubt. If it's true that the party leadership leans more on family ties, money and friendship to handpick flag bearers as a section of members have expressed, then this will see the losing loyalty and support.
Besides all, consensus doesn't build democracy; if these people are not opportunistic and they believe in the ideas of NUP as a party, then candidates should have been subjected to primary elections. Otherwise, this process is counterproductive to the ideals that the party is said to be fighting for because harmonization is promoting fraud and this wouldn't be different from the one they talk about in NRM.
