{UAH} Revolutionary struggles: Maria Lorena Barros,

Maria Lorena Barros, nicknamed Lorie, was a Filipina revolutionary and women's movement leader who fought the U.S.-backed Marcos dictatorship. Born on March 18, 1948 in Baguio City, Philippines, the daughter of Alicia Morelos and Romeo Barros, she wrote poetry and essays and was a student at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Lorie joined different organizations, such as the UP Anthropology Society and the UP Writer's Club. By the end of the 1960s, she became increasingly politically aware and politicized. In early 1970, Lorie co-founded the all-women's group MAKIBAKA (Malayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan), the Free Movement of New Women. The group addressed women's concerns, particularly women workers, within the context of the class struggle. When Ferdinand Marcos suspended the writ of habeas corpus in August 1971, Lorie went underground and joined the New People's Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). In 1973, she was captured and tortured by the military while pregnant, causing her to have a miscarriage. She later escaped prison with three other political prisoners and hid in the mountains of Southern Tagalog where she continued the struggle. In the early morning of March 24, 1976, Lorie was killed in an encounter with Marcos' paramilitary forces in the town of Mauban, Quezon Province. She was only 28 years old. Lorie was among the 207 revolutionary heroes and martyrs honored in the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Wall of Remembrance, which lists the names of the activists who were killed, disappeared, or fought during the Marcos dictatorship.
