{UAH} OMORO: NUP Candidate Toolit Akecha Accuses Party of Failing To Fund His Campaigns

The National Unity Platform (NUP) aspiring candidate for the Omoro county by-election Simon Toolit Akecha has accused his own party of failing to fund his campaigns.

Mr Toolit Akecha told this website today Thursday that the Kamwokya based party has not yet supported him financially to match his strong NRM rival despite several promises that funds would be disbursed to his accounts very soon.

"So far the party has not sent me any single penny even after several promises from the leadership. I have been trying to reach out to the principal to express my frustrations in but all is in vain".

Akecha added that "Apart from their presence during my nomination and organizing you people from the media to come and share my message, my party is still mute about the issue of funds yet my competitor from the NRM seems to be gaining more ground because of strong financial muscle from his party".

The former Forum for Democratic stalwart noted that he has initiated a fundraising campaign from the well-wishers to bankroll his election campaign.

Toolit revealed that the well-wishers can send money 0782191711 in the names of Ceaser Lubangakene.

Toolit who was a former member of the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party was unveiled as NUP flag bearer by the party president Robert Kyagulanyi late last month.

He explained that crossing from FDC to NUP was a better choice since they are currently the strongest Opposition political party in the country with the highest number of Members of Parliament.

Toolit contested earlier with Oulanyah in Omoro County in the 2016 Parliamentary election and came second with 9,088 votes against Oulanyah's 11,044 votes.

Joel Ssenyonyi the party spokesperson did not answer or return our calls for a comment.

The National Unity Platform since it came to Uganda's political scene has had issues with its flagbearers in as far as funding their election campaigns is concerned.

During the 2021 general elections, many party flag bearers clashed with the party leadership because it failed to release financial support after about USD 10m in foreign donations was allegedly swindled by the top NUP officials.

Part of the money was to facilitate all the Party activities ahead of the 2021 elections as each of flag bearer was expected to bag at least Shs20m for the campaigns.

In most parts of the country especially in Sebei, Teso, Bugisu and Busoga, NUP flagbearers defected to other political parties citing lack of transparency, honesty and trust among party leadership. They said Bobi Wine promised them heaven on earth and failed to live to his word by giving them campaign money.

In Busia alone, 325 NUP supporters including flagbearers for Samia Bugwe North and Samia Bugwe South constituencies all crossed to NRM. In Sebei, top regional NUP mobilizers also crossed to the ruling party while the same defections happened in the districts of Kumi, Amuria, Namayingo, Kamuli etc.

Also in Bunyoro region, NUP flagbearer for Hoima East MP race Jackson Atugonza Jackson and flagbearer for Hoima woman MP Rachael Ainebyoona were among those who crossed to NRM.
