{UAH} Joseph Jenkins Roberts

Upon independence of Liberia in 1847, Joseph Jenkins Roberts was elected the first president of Liberia. The 1847 Constitution denied suffrage to the indigenous population. For one to qualify as a voter, the law required them to own real estate. As a result, the presidency was exclusively held by Americo-Liberians until 1980, when a military coup led by Samuel Doe, an ethnic Krahn, overthrew and murdered President William Tolbert.

Joseph Jenkins Roberts ruled Liberia first from (1848–1856) and (1872–1876).
