On Tuesday, twenty-four Republican governors released a joint statement pledging to assist Texas in securing its 1,254-mile border with Mexico.

The move responded to Texas Governor Greg Abbott's request for help as he sought to combat the influx of illegal immigrants and drugs into the state. The governors commended Abbott for his leadership in the face of the Biden administration's open-border policies, which they claim have failed to protect American citizens.

"The federal government's response handling the expiration of Title 42 has represented a complete failure of the Biden Administration," the joint statement reads. "While the federal government has abdicated its duties, Republican governors stand ready to protect the U.S.-Mexico border and keep families safe."

The governors also highlighted the impact of illegal drugs on their states, stating that "all states have suffered from the effects of deadly illegal drugs coming across the border, and every state is a border state due to the devastating influx of drugs in our communities." They pledged to increase support for law enforcement interdiction of drugs and increase Fentanyl sentencing, among other measures.

Abbott had sent an urgent request to the nation's governors, asking them to band together to defeat the invasion at the U.S./Mexico border, which he said impacts every community in the United States. He noted that "emboldened Mexican drug cartels and other transnational criminal enterprises profit off this chaos, smuggling people and dangerous drugs like fentanyl into communities nationwide."

While no Democratic governors responded to Abbott's letter, twenty-four Republican governors pledged to help, including those from Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming. However, the Democratic governors of neighboring border states, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, did not acknowledge Abbott's request for help.

The joint statement from the Republican governors comes as the former chiefs of ICE and CBP warned that the Biden administration's open-border policies are the greatest threat to U.S. national security. According to The Washington Examiner, there have been at least 125 suspected terrorists apprehended on the border in this fiscal year alone.

Abbott has deployed the Texas National Guard to the southern border following the expiration of the public health authority Title 42, enacted during the Trump administration, that expelled illegal immigrants over health concerns. The Border Patrol Union has repeatedly called out the Biden administration's border failures on Twitter, stating that there have been up to 10,000 daily apprehensions with more than 100,000 immigrants waiting in Mexico to cross over illegally.
