No Docs, No Go: House Oversight Committee Decides Next Steps For Chris Wray

Recently, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability has called on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to release documents related to an alleged bribery scheme during Joe Biden's vice-presidential tenure under President Obama.

The FBI, however, has declined to comply with the request, prompting the Committee to consider holding FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress.

The Committee's statement reads, "Oversight Committee will now take steps to hold FBI Director Wray in contempt of Congress." This follows a subpoena issued by the Committee, compelling the FBI to produce the requested documents. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy warned Wray of potential contempt of Congress charges if the FBI fails to comply.

James Comer (R-Ky.), Chair of the Oversight Committee, has expressed dissatisfaction with the FBI's refusal, calling it "obstructionist and unacceptable." He stated, "Today, the FBI informed the Committee that it will not provide the unclassified documents subpoenaed by the Committee. The FBI's decision to stiff-arm Congress and hide this information from the American people is obstructionist and unacceptable."

Comer further revealed that he is meeting with Director Wray to discuss the matter further. He emphasized the Committee's commitment to protecting Congressional oversight authorities and its intent to hold Wray in contempt of Congress for his refusal to comply with a lawful subpoena. He concluded, "Americans deserve the truth, and the Oversight Committee will continue to demand transparency from this nation's chief law enforcement agency."

Comer and McCarthy are set to speak with Wray on Wednesday. McCarthy has asserted that the House has jurisdiction over the FBI.

Earlier this month, Comer and Sen. Chuck Grassley issued a subpoena to Attorney General Merrick Garland concerning whistleblower disclosures that suggest the FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ) possess documents related to an alleged bribery scheme involving Biden and a foreign national during his vice-presidential term.

The subpoena letter reads, "Based on those disclosures, it has come to our attention that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) possess an unclassified FD-1023 form that describes an alleged criminal scheme involving then-Vice President Biden and a foreign national relating to the exchange of money for policy decisions."

The letter further alleges that the document provides a detailed account of the alleged criminal scheme and its purpose. Comer and Grassley argue that the DOJ and the FBI have sufficient information to verify the truth and accuracy of the information contained within the document. They believe the significant public interest in the FBI's response to this information and growing concerns about potential political bias in the DOJ and the FBI's decision-making process necessitates rigorous congressional oversight. They stressed the need for an independent and objective review of the matter, free from the agencies' influence.
