American Divisions Emerge: Majority Oppose Further Funding For Ukraine's War Effort, Poll Reveals

According to a recent poll conducted by CNN, a majority of Americans are not in favor of providing additional funding to Ukraine for its war effort.

The Biden administration has already allocated billions of dollars in cash and weapons to Ukraine, with an additional $2.1 billion sent in June. Despite these efforts, 55 percent of Americans believe that the U.S. Congress should not authorize further funding for Ukraine, while 45 percent still support sending more aid. Furthermore, 51 percent of respondents feel that the U.S. has already done enough to assist the beleaguered nation.

Interestingly, the U.S. Congress, which has approved funding for Ukraine, lacks clarity on how the money has been utilized. Many Republicans have called for accountability and an audit of the funds, but their efforts have been rebuffed by the Democrat-led Senate.

These poll results differ from those shortly after the February 2022 invasion, where 62 percent of Americans believed that the U.S. should have been doing more. However, as the war has persisted without signs of resolution, support for further involvement has waned.

Support for the war effort is divided along party lines, with 71 percent of Republicans opposing additional funding and 59 percent believing that the U.S. has already done enough for Ukraine. On the other hand, 62 percent of Democrats support the war effort and advocate for further funding. Among liberal Democrats, support for the war effort is even higher, with 74 percent in favor. https://twitter.com/ben_kew/status/1687438986850050051/photo/1

When asked about the type of support the U.S. should provide, respondents who supported further funding prioritized intelligence gathering. This idea was backed by 70 percent of Democrats, 63 percent of independents, and 56 percent of Republicans. Additionally, 64 percent of Democrats favored funding military training, while 61 percent of Democrats supported providing more weapons.

In contrast, only 39 percent of independents and 30 percent of Republicans were in favor of providing more weapons. Both parties, as well as independents, were opposed to deploying U.S. troops to fight in Ukraine. Currently, U.S. special forces are stationed in Ukraine, operating out of the American embassy in Kyiv.

The CNN poll was conducted by SSRS from July 1 to 31 among a random national sample of 1,279 adults who were initially reached by mail. Surveys were conducted either online or by telephone with a live interviewer. The margin of sampling error for the full sample is plus or minus 3.7 percentage points, with a larger margin for subgroups.
