Battling Trump's Dominance: DeSantis Gambles Big By Making MAJOR Shift In Campaign

Written By BlabberBuzz | Friday, 06 October 2023 23:10

In a bold strategic move, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida is shifting a significant portion of his campaign staff to Iowa, a state known for its early Republican voting, according to a report by The New York Times.

This decision comes at a critical juncture for DeSantis, whose campaign has been struggling in the polls since spring.

The Iowa caucus, scheduled for next January, is viewed as a crucial opportunity for DeSantis to regain momentum and reverse the negative narratives surrounding his campaign. However, the challenge is formidable, given the strong support for former President Donald Trump, who has been indicted four times yet continues to enjoy a majority backing in national polls.

The RealClearPolitics (RCP) polling average currently shows Trump with a commanding lead in Iowa, boasting a support rate of 49 percent. A CBS News poll conducted a few weeks ago even placed Trump's support at 51 percent. In contrast, DeSantis lags significantly behind, with only 16 percent of support in the RCP polling average.

Trump senior adviser Jason Miller questioned DeSantis's commitment to the Iowa strategy, telling The Times, “If he’s all in for Iowa, then why hasn’t Rob DeSanctimonious been in three weeks? This isn’t something he can afford to do since he’s trailing by more than 30 points.”

Adding to DeSantis's challenges is a financial disadvantage. Trump's campaign outpaced DeSantis's in third-quarter fundraising by a three-to-one ratio, according to The Times. Trump reportedly raised $45.5 million in the third quarter, compared to DeSantis's $15 million.

DeSantis began October with approximately $13.5 million in funds, but only a fraction of that amount, around $5 million, can be used in the primary season, according to Nicholas Nehamas, Jonathan Swan, and Shane Goldmacher of The Times. This financial constraint has forced DeSantis's campaign to rely heavily on a well-funded external group for advertising and other campaign operations.

In contrast, Trump and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have already launched television advertising campaigns. Ramaswamy, for instance, released his “Identity Crisis” ad in late March in Iowa and New Hampshire, while Trump aired a scathing ad in August criticizing prosecutors pursuing criminal charges against him.

DeSantis's financial woes follow a series of layoffs in July, when his campaign reportedly let go of 38 staffers due to his underwhelming performance. Federal filings indicate that he had 90 staffers on his payroll in June. As of now, his campaign operates with a lean team of 56, as reported by The Times.

As DeSantis stakes his campaign on a successful showing in Iowa, the coming months will be a test of his strategy's effectiveness and his ability to overcome significant challenges.
