Biden interviewed as part of special counsel investigation into classified documents

President Biden has been interviewed by the Justice Department special counsel investigating the commander in chief’s handling of classified documents from his time in the Senate and as vice president, the White House said late Monday.

The interview was “voluntary” and conducted at the White House on both Sunday and Monday, Ian Sams, a spokesman for the White House Counsel’s Office, said in a statement announcing the first major development in the case in months.

“The President has been interviewed as part of the investigation being led by Special Counsel Robert Hur,” Sams said. “The voluntary interview was conducted at the White House over two days, Sunday and Monday, and concluded Monday.”

“As we have said from the beginning, the President and the White House are cooperating with this investigation, and as it has been appropriate, we have provided relevant updates publicly, being as transparent as we can consistent with protecting and preserving the integrity of the investigation. We would refer other questions to the Justice Department at this time,” his statement concluded. 

Hur, 50, was appointed in January to lead the probe into the 80-year-old president’s handling of classified documents after revelations that Biden stashed sensitive records at his abandoned Penn Biden Center think tank office in Washington and next to his Corvette in the garage of his Wilmington, Del., home.

The Nov. 2, 2022,  discovery by Biden’s lawyers of at least a dozen classified documents – some related to the United Kingdom, Ukraine and Iran – at his old office near the US Capitol was kept under wraps by the White House through the 2022 midterm elections and for weeks after.

More sensitive documents were discovered in Biden’s Wimington home in January after an FBI search. The bureau also searched the president’s Rehoboth Beach, Del., home as part of the probe but did not turn up any additional documents. 

Biden has dismissed the shocking findings as simply “stray papers” that ended up on his property and private office because of careless aides who packed up his White House office over a decade ago.

“The best of my knowledge, the kinds of things they picked up are things that are from 1974 and stray papers – there may be something else, I don’t know,” Biden told PBS News Hour host Judy Woodruff earlier this year, attempting to contrast his mishandling of classified material to former President Donald Trump’s document scandal. 

Biden argued that unlike Trump, “no one has had to threaten to do anything” and that he didn’t have his vice presidential and senate documents “laid out” on the floor, with “top secret code word and all the rest” – a reference to the infamous FBI photograph of Trump’s classified White House papers splayed out on a carpeted floor inside his Mar-a-Lago estate. 

Trump, 77, has pleaded not guilty to 37 counts of allegedly concealing national security material at his Palm Beach, Fla. estate after leaving office — and then lying to federal authorities who sought the documents.

Biden’s interview with the special counsel seemingly explains why the White House declared for the second day in a row Monday that there would be no public appearances by the president — moments after the State Department confirmed that at least 11 US citizens are among the more than 900 killed by Hamas terrorists during their weekend attack on Israel.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
