In the wake of a Tuesday meeting with Democrats discussing President Joe Biden's political trajectory for the 2024 election, a group of swing district Democrats convened in a poignant gathering marked by "actual tears."
President Biden, undeterred in his political pursuits, has pledged to challenge Donald Trump in the upcoming November elections. This has sparked concern among some swing district Democrats in Congress, who anticipate a tight race down-ballot. As reported by The Post Millennial, this group of battleground district Democrats represents one of the last remaining factions in a reportedly "disintegrating" effort on Capitol Hill to persuade Biden to withdraw from the race.
The meeting was described as "intense" by one lawmaker, with another noting "there were actual tears from people, and not for Biden." The implication is clear: if Biden remains in the race, swing district Democrats will bear the brunt of the impact in the November elections. "Most of our caucus is still with him ... meaning he'll stay in. Which sucks for our country," lamented one Democrat who attended both the larger meeting and the swing group gathering.
Earlier in the week, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), who had advocated for Biden's withdrawal, stated, "Whether or not I have concerns is besides the point. He is going to be our nominee and, we all have to support him." On Monday evening, a House Democrat revealed that the campaign to pressure Biden to step down is "folding all over the place," with many congressional representatives becoming resigned to Biden's continued candidacy.
"As someone who wanted the reckoning and is really disappointed that it's over, trust me: it's over," the Democrat representative added. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) suggested that Biden's Monday morning letter was a "preemptive effort to try to discourage any questions."
In his letter, Biden called on Democrats on Capitol Hill to rally around him to defeat Trump. "The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it's time for it to end. We have one job. And that is to beat Donald Trump. We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election. Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us," the letter read. This plea underscores the urgency and complexity of the political landscape, with the future of the Democratic party hanging in the balance.
