{UAH} Oya and Ego: Learning Kirundi by fire

So, Baboons

Last evening had a hilarious but hard time when conversing with a Kirundi muchacha.

We fought over "Oh, yea".

Kiga Bwoyi hadn't told me there was another word pronounced exactly the same way in Kirundi. Kwa ukwanza I didn't even know there was language called Kirundi or an ethnicity in the region called Rundi or Barundi. I simply know two main  ethnicities in the region - Hutu and Tutsi.

Muchacha kept disputing everything i said until we commonly found out what was causing the disagreement.

There is a major communication problem btwn us. She speaks Kirundi, French and their awkward kind of Swahili which requires a third ear to understand. Baboon on the other hand speaks the regular stuff in English, Swahili and good'ol Luo with a pinch of unhelpful French. But like in many languages one can be good at speaking, reading or listening or all the above. French and me can only read and understand each other. No speak, no write

Apparently "Oya", which is pronounced the same way as "Oh yea" in Kirundi means "No". So, everytime I exclaimed "Oh yea" we would enter an arguement. Ego on the other hand means "Yes".

So, beware next time a Burundiam rearranges your face. Means you said No if you answered "Oh yea!" instead of Yes or Ego.

But, bwoyi oh bwoyi.....! Is the muchacha angelic or what..! Daiyummmm gorgeous is what I can say amd most probably reason she is a flight attendant.
