As uganda prepares to joins the rest of the world to commemorate the world Hepatitis B held every 28th of July, it has been revealed that atleast 3.5 million Ugandans are leaving with viral Hepatitis B with many ignorant about their condition since the disease doesn't show symptoms in its early stages.
This has been revealed by the National Organisation for People Living with Hepatitis B NOPLHB executive director Kenneth Kabagambe during a press conference in Kampala about the preparations for the day's events tomorrow Friday at makerere play ground where they also intend to give free medical check ups and the president Yoweri Kagutta museveni to grace the occasion.
Kabagambe says that 80% of the liver cancer disease is attributed to hepatitis B hence appealing to the public to do check ups whenever an opportunity avails and not to fear once found positive since its curable.
He also says that Uganda is still faced with a challenge of lack of a clear referral system where the positive people can be recommended though there many private clinics treating the disease and the lack of curing drug in the country since the drugs prescribed by the medical officers are those from the HIV/AIDS programme.
Kabagambe has thus appealed to the President Museveni to take lead in the fight to eliminate the disease since its ceased being a dream to being achievable especially if all stakeholders work together towards the same.
According to global hepatitis report, the disease causes 1.3 million deaths while those living with it account to 325 millions.
This year's theme is eliminate hepatitis.
