{UAH} Mak VC loser Kirumira given back principal job

Prof. Edward Kirumira, Principal-College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS)

Professor Edward Kirumira looks set to retain his position as a college principal at Makerere University just a day after losing in the race to become vice chancellor.

The three-man race for vice chancellor ended yesterday with the University Council voting overwhelmingly in favour of Professor Barnabas Nawangwe and forwarding his name to the Chancellor for appointment.

In the Council vote, Nawangwe, who is the deputy vice chancellor for finance and administration, got 16 votes against Kirumira with two and Professor Venancius Baryamureeba with four votes.

The same Council sitting, however, forwarded the names of college principals, including Kirumira's, for appointment.

Kirumira, who has headed the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) for the last five years, is among six principals together with their deputies that council recommended for appointment.

"At a special meeting held on Thursday 29th June 2017, Makerere University Council received and considered the recommendations of the University Senate on the Report of the Search Committee for Principals and Deputy Principals," said a statement from Ritah Namisango, the university public relations officer.

This is the second time the university is selecting principals and deputies since its adoption of collegiate system in 2012.

The university currently has nine colleges and one autonomous school, the School of Law.

Namisango says the university council, the supreme governing body of the university, unanimously recommended the candidates to the Chancellor, Dr. Ezra Suruma, for appointment.

"The University only advertised the position of Principal and Deputy Principal in the Colleges where current contracts for the respective positions were coming/had come to an end," Namisango explained.

Only Prof. Bernard Bashaasha, the current principal of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences- CAES and his deputy, Dr. Gorettie Nsubuga Nabanoga had their positions readvertised.
