Mt. Kenya Leaders Clash Over DP William Ruto's 2022 Running Mate

A row pitting Central Kenya politicians and leaders from Embu and Meru over who will be Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 running mate has threatened to split Jubilee party.

A section of leaders from Meru and Embu have threatened to ditch Jubilee if Central Kenya does not allow Ruto's running mate to hail from either of the two regions.

Leaders from Meru and Embu argue that they have supported three presidents from central; Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta under the Gema banner and it's time for them to reciprocate the support by allowing Ruto's running mate to hail from the region.

"We are very clear this time. We expect Central Kenya to support a person from Mount Kenya East in 2022 without fail," said Tharaka-Nithi Woman Representative Beatrice Nkatha.

"We believe Central Kenya, which has produced three presidents with our support, will in 2022 support Prof Kindiki as Ruto's running mate," said Chuka/Igambang'ombe MP Patrick Munene.

"It is time Central Kenya supported us. We have supported them for more than five decades," Senate deputy speaker Prof Kithure Kindiki said.

Leaders from Central Kenya have dismissed the threats by their Mt Kenya East counterparts, noting that Ruto will have the final say on who will deputize him.

"I wish the Ameru people well but the seat is remaining in Central and specifically in Murang'a," said Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata.

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria said: "The people in Mt Kenya do not give a hoot where you come from as long as you can articulate their issues."

Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua termed the debate as retrogressive, while Nyeri Senator Ephraim Maina and Kieni MP Kanini Kega said the leaders should let Ruto choose his running mate.
