83 Ugandans arrested en-route to Syria
Entebe Airport police Tuesday arrested 83 people who were reportedly travelling to war-torn Syria to work as security guards for a petroleum firm.
The youthful men were arrested after security officials suspected their "weird actions" while waiting for their flight, according to Mr Tinka Zarugaba, Entebbe Airport Crime Investigations chief.
Mr Zarugaba said on being interrogated, the men revealed that they were mobilised by one Rajab Kamugisha who promised them guarding jobs at Chevron Petroleum Limited in Syria.
According to police, Mr Kamugisha revealed that he was contacted by his friend who wanted guards in Syria. Most of the arrested men have ever served as private security guards in Iraq.
Mr Kamugisha recorded a statement in which he stated that the men were travelling via Kenya where they were scheduled to get Visa clearance by Obsolete Security Company.
Mr Zarugaba said Mr Kamugisha did not have a clearance certificate from the Labour Ministry to export labourers.
"We released all the 82 people because they were just victims. We retained their ring leader Kamugisha who is going to court on charges of human trafficking," Mr Zarugaba said.
He said passports of the arrested men were retained by police.
