The founders of the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America had a tremendous devotion to the mother of Jesus, and honored her in the popular name of Maryknoll. But this followed many centuries of similar devotion, in which Mary assumed ever grander status and titles of respect. In the process, Christians tended to lose sight of the very human young Jewish woman depicted in the gospels. Mary Christine Athans reviews this history, and embarks on an effort to encounter this woman anew in her book, In Quest of the Jewish Mary: The Mother of Jesus in History, Theology, and Spirituality.
