DHAKA, Bangladesh—A war-crimes tribunal on Thursday convicted an Islamist
leader of crimes carried out during the nation's bitter 1971 war of
independence and sentenced him to death.
The three-member tribunal found Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, the assistant
general secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami, the nation's largest Islamist party,
guilty on five charges, including mass murder and torture. He had pleaded
not guilty.
Tens of thousands of civilians died in 1971 as Islamist-backed militias,
which favored remaining part of Pakistan, attacked Bengali-speaking
communities
