Museveni Wants MTN, UTL Licenses Cancelled

President Museveni has directed Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi to cancel the monopoly agreements held by MTN Uganda Ltd and UTL over international voice-over traffic, to pave way for his attempt to attract new investors in internet-based professional services.

"The problem are the monopolies we had previously given to UTL, MTN and Celtel," said the president in a 2-page letter signed by himself, dated Sept. 6, 2001, which The Monitor has seen.
