[UAH] Tinye Held 'Meeting' With UK Diplomat, Says Ex Spy

A former spy chief has added a twist to the drama surrounding the Coordinator of Intelligence Organs Gen David Tinyefuza's (Sejusa)'s controversial letters. The former head of Political Intelligence at State House, Charles Rwomushana has revealed that Tinyefuza held a meeting with a British diplomat before one of the letters, in which he seeks investigation into reports that some officers opposed to the idea of Brig. Muhoozi Kainerugaba succeeding President Yoweri Museveni were targeted for assassination, was leaked to the  media.

"Available intelligence indicates the Tinyefuza letter was first discussed with a top British diplomat before it was leaked," said Rwomushana on Friday. The new revelation could put the UK government under spotlight for having a hand in the turmoil in the army sparked off by Tinyefuza's letter.

The General is currently holed up in London, UK, with reports indicating that he is seeking asylum. Tinyefuza faces arrest upon return.

President Yoweri Museveni and Gen Salim Saleh have asked Tinyefuza to apologise for his "offensive and divisive" remarks. Rwomushana has since appealed to Museveni not to jail Tinyefuza.

"I would strongly recommend that president Museveni relaxes the situation, guarantees General Tinyefuza his freedom… a tough stance is not in the long run interest of this country," said Rwomushana on Wednesday. He further noted that Tinyefuza crossed the redline by alleging that a plot had been hatched to eliminate those opposed to the idea of Brig Muhoozi Kainerugaba succeeding his father as Uganda's next President.

Rwomushana was surprised that such controversial statements were "not from Dr Olara Otunnu, Kizza Besigye and Norbert Mao but Gen Tinyefuza."

He added: "That is a red line Tinyefuza crossed. Is there a third but clever force setting all this to build a case for war?"

Rwomushana noted that "You rarely see a smile on those that have been central in intelligence service."He said for the situation to relax, there was need for Museveni to loosen up on fired NRM rebel MPs, "reengage the Kabaka of Buganda into dialogue and carry out a deeper study on the trend of events more especially why people are murdered in such a vicious way."

Gen Tinyefuza remarks have angered the UPDF leadership, with Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Aronda Nyakairima blasting the embattled General for speaking without authority from the latter.Information Minister Mary Karooro Okurut has hinted on a possible prosecution of the General at the Military Court Martial for a charge of spreading harmful propaganda that attracts a life imprisonment or death sentence.
