Uganda's Museveni Calls For Africa's Meaningful Development

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has challenged African presidents attending the African Union (AU) summit in Ethiopia to commemorate the jubilee of union by focusing on developing electricity and infrastructure.

Museveni challenged his colleagues to promote development of electricity and infrastructure like roads and railways to be able to make any meaningful development in Africa.

The AU member states are meeting to reflect on various issues affecting the continent.

The African Heads of State attending the AU summit in Addis Ababa are later today, Saturday, expected to debate on a proposal seeking to terminate the charges facing President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto at the International Criminal Court.

The proposal to discuss termination of the ICC cases against President Kenyatta, Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang was submitted by Uganda's Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kutesa during the summit.

Reports from Addis Ababa indicate that AU member states might be considering mass withdrawal from the Rome Statute, which formed the ICC, if cases against Kenyatta, Ruto and journalist Sang are not dropped, this even as many delegates remain tight-lipped on the issue.

AU Commission Chairperson Dr. Dlamini Zuma has however denied the reports, saying the ICC matter will be debated by AU Heads of State.

This even as Kenya's bid to have UN Security Council to end the ICC cases failed after the Unisted States and Europe opposed it.

The Africa Union has been in existence for the last 50 years and was formerly known as the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
