[UAH] Mombasa pimp stripper 'Spider' fined Sh5,000

Mombasa pimp stripper 'Spider' fined Sh5,000

"The Sexual Offences Act needs amendment. Otherwise, strip dancing will not end in Kenya," declared a police officer at the Shanzu Law Courts yesterday.

Shem Ibrahim Nyabola had just walked out of prison after admitting charges of public exhibition of indecency.

Nyabola, alias Spider, is behind the recruitment of strippers at night clubs in Mtwapa and Mombasa. Spider's wife Husna Abdalla was at his side.

Magistrate James Omburah fined Spider Sh5,000 or three months imprisonment. Three of Spider's employees, who were also arrested and charged, were released after paying a similar fine.

Prosecutor Paul Makonge asked the court to give Spider a deterrent sentence arguing that Spider had degraded societal values. The police officer, who sought anonymity, said the Sexual Offences Act of 2006 does not capture the offence Spider committed.

"The law was formulated when such things were still unheard of in Kenya," he said. "Strip dancing was only practised in popular clubs and exclusive homes. But now it is practised even in local clubs," said the policeman.

He blamed youth unemployment. "There are no jobs in Kenya. We keep on hearing that there are youth funds but don't know how we can access them," he said. Meanwhile, three of the seven girls who were assisted by nominated senator Emma Mbura, who bailed them out of prison, yesterday accused her of bias.

The three said that the senator favoured only three of them and left the other four to fend for themselves. Sophia Mustafa, who spoke on behalf of Stephan Maina and Veronica Ogalu, said that wellwishers provided Sh50,000 for all four to share.

Sophia claimed the money was given only to Immaculate Koni, Mwanajuma Hamisi and Anne Wangare, who are staying at Mbura's home. "They did not give us even a single cent. They said those of us who have small businesses can fend for ourselves. We were grateful for bailing us out but they could at least have given us something so we can boost our businesses," said Sophia, who has a salon business.

They were attending the case against their boss Nyabola alias Spider at Shanzu Law Court yesterday. Mbura yesterday rejected the accusation and said she did not kick anyone out of her home.

She said the remaining three were the most disciplined. She will train them and open a salon business for them. "The other four only stayed at my home for three days and asked to leave. They are not disciplined. They used to escape from the compound to go and drink local brew in the three days they were at my home," Mbura said. She denied knowledge of the Sh50,000 mentioned by Sophia.

"A lady by the name of Margaret Masaba called me and said her NGO had donated some Sh70,000 to go towards helping the ladies," said Mbura. She said Sh20,000 was given to the three girls in her care.

On her return to Mombasa she will decide how to distribute the balance. Mbura returned from Washington DC on Sunday night after almost a week in the US. She will get back to Mombasa on Thursday.

Mbura had bailed out the seven strippers from Shimo la Tewa prison on June 5 after they had been arrested at Bahnhof Bar and Restaurant in Mtwapa.
