Tanzania: Bombs Rock Chadema Rally, Three Feared Dead

BY MARC NKWAME, 16 JUNE 2013

Arusha — AT least three people are feared dead and 20 others seriously injured when three explosions, thought to be bombs, rocked the Soweto section of Kaloleni in Arusha on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred at about 6pm as the National Chairman of CHADEMA, Mr Freeman Mbowe, was disembarking from the platform after addressing a rally at the Soweto Basketball Grounds in Central Kaloleni Ward.

All of a sudden, an object suspected to be a bomb flew towards them and landed in the midst of people before exploding with a deafening sound.

Mr Mbowe was accompanied by Arusha Urban Member Parliament (MP) Godbless Lema and other several regional CHADEMA officials.

Arusha Regional Police Commander (RPC) Liberatus Sabas was still following up the issue and had not compiled a conclusive report about the incident nor was he sure of the exact number of the persons killed in the explosion.

Arusha Regional Commissioner (RC) Magessa Mulongo said he was away in Rombo to attend a funeral at the time of the incident. He was summoning officials to discuss the issue.

Mount Meru Regional Hospital was a hive of activity as injured persons were being brought to the hospital while residents thronged the medical institution to enquire about their relatives.

Some casualties were shifted to other hospitals, including the Selian Lutheran Hospital.

There were screams at the rally grounds as hundreds of people fled in all directions in confusion, seeking for cover. The situation was aggravated when two more blasts rocked the area.

"I am okay, we are all fine," said Mr Mbowe when he was finally escorted to his car. The CHADEMA leader, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament, was visibly shaken.

The meeting was the last among the series of campaign rallies taking place here as Arusha City goes to vote this Sunday to fill the vacuum for representatives at four wards namely Kaloleni, Themi, Elerai and Kimandolu.
