Fr Gaetano apologises for leading people into NRM
Fr Gaetano Batanyenda, the chairperson for Inter-religious Council for Kigezi sub-region, has apologised for "misleading people" into joining the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Fr Batanyenda, also the parish priest for Kitanga Parish, Kabale Diocese, said he mobilised support for President Museveni and the NRM party in the past because of the good personality of its leader, and also because the party was organised, something he said has since changed.
Fr Batanyenda made the remarks during a radio talk on a local FM station in Kabale at the weekend. He said he had been a volunteer mobilised for the NRM party since 1996.
He accused the NRM government of continued disrespect of institutions like Parliament and the Judiciary. He also asked Gen Aronda Nyakairima to "demonstrate patriotism and decline President Museveni's appointment as Internal Affairs minister without retiring him from the army."
"Gen Aronda's work record is very clear, therefore, he should be brave enough to say no to political appointment when he is still an army serving officer," Fr Batanyenda said. He added: "Why did President Museveni allow Gen Jeje Odongo to retire from the army? Is it because he comes from Eastern Uganda?"
Fr Batanyenda added that the political appointment of Nyakairima without retiring him from the army is an indication that NRM party is returning the military rule in Uganda.
