Obote spent last few years (16 ?) in exile in Zambia and died in Johannesburg, South Africa in the hospital. On the 9th of October 2005 the current president at the Independence celebrations mentioned in his speech that Obote was the cause of all the post independence problems that Uganda faced. The following day (10th) Obote died and a week later during the parliamentary session held in his honor Museveni laid a wreath on his coffin and give a speech in parliament saying he (Obote) had contributed a lot to Uganda and last year he (Museveni) declared him a hero and gave his son a medal on behalf of his fallen father!!!!!! Lol Surely politics has neither friends nor enemies.

Museveni was very embarrased during those two weeks as the press continually quoted him on his utterances the day before Obote died while the private T.V stations kept continually reporting about the good things Obote did then all the print media published his picture laying a wreath on the front page. His family during those two weeks before his was burried insisted on getting their property that government had seized and all this was in the press while the rest of Africa was watching. He had no choice. Otherwise I think Obote deserved a descent send off.

When Obote was alive, he always posed a potential threat to Museveni as a worthy opposition who would rise from the ashes. So to bad mouth Obote became a weapon of choice. Once Obote was clinically dead such a threat was mitigated. Museveni, at this fortuitous moment, began to sing his accolades to appease Obote's loyal followers. He secured a path to new majority with subdued opposition. So Museveni cleverly made up with Obote after the last rite for political expediency in a tombstone diplomacy. Obote consented or obliged with a slumbering silence

Politics make strange bedfellows............In war and politics all is fair. it is more to do with joining them that one cannot beat. Idi Amin was great friends with Gaddaffi(not sure of the spelling) while Museveni could not even let Amin be burried in Uganda, he danced with Gaddaffi all the way to the end of his rein.

Little did he (Museveni) know that Besigye was now rising from the other side
